Please note: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting a service manual to perform this adjustment. I AM NOT including valve clearance specifications in this, because they are different on different engines.

Not all Mirages have adjustable valves. Please refer to a service manual to determine if your's does.

Car performed on: 1993 1.5l 4 Door

Performed by: blytz

Tools:
Rachet
10mm Socket
12mm Socket
19mm Breaker Bar
Feeler Gauge
Phillip's Screwdriver #2

Warm the car to operating temperature before starting this procedure.

First, remove the valve cover and spark plug wires. The manual I was using said to pull the spark plugs too (I don't think it is neccessary).

The manual I used said to then remove the timing belt upcover (again, doesn't seem neccessary).

Remove to wheel closest to the timing pulley(driver's Side on 93-96). Pull back the plastic cover that limits access to the timing marks. Do this by unscrewing the few screws around this plastic piece. This picture above shows the plastic pulled back from the wheel area, and the green circled area is the timing mark on the pulley and the alignment tabs. Turn the pulley until the mark in the pulley(a small groove) is perfectly aligned with the "T" on the alignment tab.

Returning to the engine, you want the number one(closest the the timing belt) cylinder intake valves to be loose(has a SMALL amount of play), as well as the number 2 intake valves, and the number 1 and number 3 exhaust valves.

Check the gap on the valves with a feeler gauge.

If any of the valves are out of adjustment, loosen the locknut on that valve.

Loosen or tighten the screw with the feeler gauge under the screw, until there is slight resistance on the feeler gauge. Then holding the screw in place with the screwdriver, tighten the locknut.

Once you have completed the number 1 and number 2 intake valves and number 1 and number 3 exhaust valves, rotate the pulley one full turn, realigning the timing marks again.

Repeat the above adjusts one the number 3 and number 4 intake valves and number 2 and number 4 exhaust valves.

Replace the plastic in the wheel well, the wheel, the valve cover, plugs, plug wires, and timing belt upper cover.
